Creating a Space for Your Computer at Home

Before purchasing a personal computer, it is important to prepare a space for it in your home. Ideally, it should have its own room, perhaps in a small library or a study if you have one. This is especially necessary if you will be using the computer mostly for school or work-related tasks. If it is not possible to have a computer room, you can make use of divider screens to define a space for your PC.

Your desktop computer should not be placed near windows where it might be exposed to large amounts of sunlight. Exposure to too much heat can cause damage. Keep your computer in a room where temperatures are always moderate to cool, and always unplug it when not in use.

To make your computer use as comfortable as possible, your desk should be the appropriate height and your chair should be ergonomic in design. This means that the seat height should be adjustable and you should be able to comfortably lean your back against the chair. The room where you place your computer in should also be well-lighted. You can use desktop lamps to help you see the screen better at night.

If you have kids living in the house, it would be advisable to place the computer in a high-traffic area such as near the kitchen, or in a room (such as a study) where everyone is free to come and go as they please. This allows parents to monitor their child's Web browsing habits to make sure that they are not visiting dangerous websites or online places that make them vulnerable to abusers.
