CHECK YOUR CONNECTION

Run a quick internet speed test

The test itself opens on Speedtest.net in a new browser tab. Once it has finished, come back here to understand the results and work through some simple checks if your connection is slower than expected.

Ready to test your connection?

For the most useful result, make sure you are connected to the Wi-Fi or wired network you actually want to check.

Run Internet Speed Test

Opens Speedtest.net in a new tab. Speedtest.net is an external service.

BEFORE YOU TEST

Get a more useful result

A few simple checks can make your result easier to understand and compare.

01

Use the connection you want to check

If you are checking Wi-Fi performance, stay connected to Wi-Fi. If you want to compare the broadband connection itself, test again using Ethernet where possible.

02

Pause heavy internet use

Large downloads, cloud backups, streaming and other busy devices can affect the result. Pause them where practical before running the test.

03

Run the test more than once

Internet performance can vary. Running two or three tests at different times gives you a more useful picture than relying on one result.

UNDERSTANDING THE RESULTS

What do the numbers mean?

The three main figures describe different parts of your internet connection. They should be considered together rather than looking at download speed alone.

Download Speed

Measured in Mbps

This is how quickly information reaches your device. Higher download speeds generally help with web browsing, streaming, downloads and online services.

Upload Speed

Measured in Mbps

This is how quickly your device can send information. Upload performance matters for cloud backups, sending large files and video calls.

Latency

Measured in milliseconds

Latency is the delay between your device and the service it is communicating with. Lower latency generally gives a more responsive connection.

RESULT LOWER THAN EXPECTED?

Try a few simple checks first

A slow speed test does not automatically mean there is a fault with your computer. Wi-Fi signal strength, other devices, your router, your internet provider and general network demand can all influence the result.

Try the checks opposite, then run the speed test again and compare the results.

Quick checks

  • Move closer to the router if you are using Wi-Fi.
  • Restart the router and allow it time to reconnect.
  • Try another computer, phone or tablet.
  • If practical, compare Wi-Fi with an Ethernet connection.
  • Pause downloads, streaming and cloud backups.
  • Run another test at a different time of day.

STILL HAVING PROBLEMS?

Need help with slow or unreliable internet?

If your connection keeps dropping, Wi-Fi coverage is poor or one of your computers is much slower than the others, ILL IT Solutions can help you work out where the problem is.

About speed test results

Internet speed test results can vary depending on your device, Wi-Fi signal, network traffic, router, broadband connection and the test service being used. A single result should therefore be treated as a useful snapshot rather than a guarantee of ongoing connection speed.
